Product recall: Ethylene oxide is extremely dangerous - contaminated sesame is not an isolated incident
The substance that contaminated the sesame in the affected snacks is highly dangerous.
Ethylene oxide is used as a disinfectant for food, organic insulation, textile fibers and medical devices.
The chemical is toxic and carcinogenic.
Short-term symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea and, in worse cases, twitching and convulsions up to a comatose state.
In Germany, the use of ethylene oxide in the food sector has been banned since 1981.
Last December there was a recall for an “Italy” snack.
At that time, a company from the Czech Republic also recalled breadsticks because of residues of ethylene oxide in the sesame.
