Prices, Istat: 'In January + 07% month, + 0.4% year'

Energy expenditure is growing. 'Inflation turns positive' (ANSA)


In January, the national consumer price index for the whole community (NIC), gross of tobacco, is estimated to have increased by 0.7% on a monthly basis and by 0.4% on an annual basis (from - 0.2% in December).

Istat notes this on the basis of definitive data, specifying that the preliminary estimate was + 0.2%.

The cyclical increase in the general index is mainly due to the rise in the prices of energy goods.

The inflation acquired for 2021 is + 0.6% for the general index and + 0.3% for the core component.

"After 8 months of negative changes in consumer prices on an annual basis, inflation turns positive".

In January, the prices of the shopping cart (Food goods, for home and personal care) decelerate on a trend basis from + 0.6% to + 0.4%, while those of high-frequency purchasing products mitigate the their decline from -0.3% to -0.1%.

Faced with an overall trend increase in prices of 0.4% in January, there are cities in which inflation was much higher than the average such as Bolzano and Perugia (1%) and others in which prices fell (Aosta, -0.3%).

Istat notes this on the basis of definitive data.

In Rome, prices on average remained unchanged while in Milan they grew by 0.1%, in Naples prices in January grew by 0.8% compared to a year earlier, slightly less than Modena and Trento (+ 0.9% ).

Among the Regions, Trentino Alto Adige (+ 0.9%), Calabria, Umbria (+ 0.8% both) and Campania (+ 0.6%) stand out for the increase in prices, while Lombardy marks an increase by 0.2% and Lazio prices unchanged.
