The man was walking with his dog in the mountains when the accident happened: In the Italian Alps, a 33-year-old hiker fell several meters and broke his ankle.
The man then survived for seven days in low temperatures outdoors - so he told the rescue workers a week after the accident when they finally found him.
His dog "helped him survive," said the climber.
He stayed by his side the entire time.
There is no cell phone reception at this point in the Alps in northeastern Italy.
The man was able to drag himself to a nearby water source, according to a report by the Italian mountain rescue service that was published on Facebook.
Due to his numerous injuries, which included several bruises in addition to the fracture, his strength was apparently insufficient for more.
The rescuers found him under a pile of leaves.
He was approachable.
The man's partner had previously alerted the rescue workers.
Accordingly, her boyfriend wanted to return to Trieste, Italy, on Monday.
When he had still not sent a sign of life on Wednesday, the search began.
The rescuers used a helicopter and finally found the man's rescue blanket not far from the scene of the accident.
The man was evidently not inexperienced; he is said to have undertaken similar walks every year.
Originally he had planned to spend the night in mountain huts north of the city of Udine.
The accident happened at the beginning of his tour.
