After allegations of abuse against US singer Marilyn Manson became known, the police in Los Angeles opened an investigation.
According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office released by US media on Friday, the investigation revolves around allegations of domestic violence between 2009 and 2011 when Manson lived in West Hollywood.
Further details were not known at first.
US actress Evan Rachel Wood and several other women had made abuse allegations against the 52-year-old Manson public in early February.
In an Instagram post, Wood accused her ex-boyfriend of years of "horrific" abuse.
This started when she was a teenager.
Manson manipulated and suppressed them.
The relationship of the then 19-year-old Wood with the rocker twice his age became known in 2007.
After several interruptions, the couple got engaged in 2010, but separated a little later.
Other women, including models Sarah McNeilly and Ashley Lindsay Morgan, also spoke out on Instagram with serious allegations against Manson.
The rock star immediately denied the allegations.
His art and life have long been "magnets for controversy," but the claims about him are "terrible falsifications of reality," the musician wrote on Instagram.
His intimate relationships with "like-minded" partners have always been amicable.
Manson's record label Loma Vista distanced itself from him.
The company will no longer work with Manson either.
Loma Vista Recordings released the Manson album "We Are Chaos" in the fall.
