“I May Destroy You”, “Quiz”, “Tiger King”… 5 series that we loved so much

Every Sunday, one of our journalists opens the secret garden of his favorite series, recent or very old.

The slap: "I May Destroy You"

This is a series that haunted me for days.

Because it is inspired by a true story, that of actress screenwriter Michaela Coela who plays her own role here, that of a rape victim after a very drunken evening.

The crime is sneaky.

Because the young woman remembers it only through progressive flashes, like pieces of a puzzle that you have to try to put together.

"I May Destroy You" draws an impressive portrait of a woman desperate to approach the truth and thus find herself.

It is violent, disturbing, essential.

One season, twelve episodes (2020).

Available on OCS.

The intriguing: "Quiz"

Did Charles Ingram cheat on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?"

»In England, in 2001, to walk away with a jackpot of 1 million pounds?

This is the question posed by this mini-series by Stephen Frears, inspired by a case that hit the headlines in the United Kingdom.

Three episodes later, I don't have the answer.

And that's good.

Because the director constantly sows doubt, tries to convince us that yes, he had an accomplice in the room who was coughing at the right time.

And then in fact maybe not, it was all about luck.

A jubilant treasure hunt.

One season, three episodes (2020).

Available on Salto.

The incredible: "Tiger King"

My favorite series of 2020 is a documentary series.

But in "Tiger King", there was nothing to invent so much the reality exceeds anything that the fiction could have imagined.

There is no one more struck than these protagonists who manage beasts in their respective zoo at the cost of limitless competition, punctuated by insults, trials, death threats and attempted murder.

America at its most crazy, where all the events, sometimes dramatic, are filmed almost live.

One season, eight episodes (2020).

Available on Netflix.

History: "Roots"

I am 7 years old on that evening of 1978 and I cry bitter tears.

Kunta Kinté has just died.

He's become an old man, sure, but I can't get over it.

For several weeks, on Antenne 2, in January 1978, I have been following the fate of this slave captured in Gambia then sold and shipped to the United States in this series, “Racines”.

I remember how he refused his new name, Toby, and stubbornly repeated that his name was Kunta Kinté.

A superhero for the child that I was.

A now legendary name picked up in multiple songs, from IAM to Kendrick Lamar.

Not sure, however, that the series has aged well since.

One season, eight episodes (1977).

Available on DVD.

The terrifying: "Don't F ** With Cats"

As the title says, “Don't Mess With Cats”.

Especially on the Internet.

This is what was fatal to Luka Rocco Magnotta, nicknamed the skinner of Montreal.

Before posting a video showing his mutilated victim, the psychopath took sadistic pleasure in uploading footage where he killed kittens.

A bunch of geeks decide to hunt down this killer of cats.

They will ultimately give valuable information to investigators.

A fascinating story and a documentary series which sheds light on this world-famous affair in a completely new way.

One season, three episodes (2019).

Watch on Netflix.
