A year ago in Codogno and throughout Italy the battle against Covid began.
And today in memory of the victims and the "resilient community" of the town of the lower Lodi area, a memorial dedicated to them was inaugurated amid applause, three steel totems representing the town where it all began and the two hamlets, with a decorative pattern in relief.
The monument was blessed by Monsignor Maurizio Malvestiti, bishop of the diocese of Lodi who recalled the "proof of solidarity" of citizens, volunteers and health personnel and the "timeless" struggle during the darkest period of the pandemic.
He recalled the phone call from Pope Francis on March 8, the Holy Father's prayer in a deserted St Peter's Square and the manifestations of friendship and closeness shown by many.
For Monsignor Malvestiti, the monument represents the "restart" and the beginning of a path towards recovery.
