In the video: In protest of their non-return to school, seventh-tenth graders are studying in the mall (Photo: Roni Knafo)

Many experts have warned of the damage that can be done to children due to non-return to school and many parents warn that they see their children withering at home for nearly a year, but what about the teens - those in grades 7-10, who did not regularly go to school for nearly a year ?

How do these children cope with the many hours they have to spend in front of the screens, the social isolation and the fact that they are always left last to return, even after the malls?

We asked seven children in these classes to tell us their side.

This is how it sounds:

What did the last year look like?

Especially in front of the screen, when I do not know all the children.

This year I joined the division and this is my first year.

I barely know the school, I have only been there a few times.

I have two girls in the class that I know from before but apart from them I do not know anyone there.

I try as much as I can to make friends through the zoom and connect with the kids.

It's mostly studying in front of the computer, it does not feel to me that I am with friends.

It's hard, but I'm already used to it, or at least I'm trying.

I really want to go back to school already.

What does your agenda look like?

I get up, get organized and sit down straight in front of the zoomers. I have lessons from 8:30 to 13:30 after that there are homework, tests that need to be prepared for - a long time in front During the closure I met less with friends, but when there is no closure I sometimes meet with friends from previous years, because in the new school I still do not know enough.

For my parents this is a normal routine, they are at work every day sometimes until late.

My mother prepares food for us and we warm up and eat lunch alone.

when are you going to sleep?

Between 23: 00-00: 00.

Is there anything good in this situation?

I think before the Corona I was in a lot of classes and every day I would go from school straight to the class. I was much less at home. Now I have more time to rest and more free time.

What is the hardest?

I do not see so many friends and do not get to experience the division like any A child before the corona, so I miss the acquaintance with the children and teachers at the new school.

Do you open a zoom camera?

Some lessons are yes and some are not.

Strives as much as possible to open, but sometimes there is no desire and unpleasant.

Sometimes teachers force a camera to open.

What did the last year look like?

It was short, but also really long.

I had a lot harder time studying, it's not the same.

You have to invest a lot more of yourself, learning a lot more independently and also the grades are not the same grades because you have to really invest and it is not always simple.

Socially I'm fine, as long as there was no closure I kept meeting with my good friends.

Obviously unlike at school you see everyone every day and meet a lot more kids, but I was not alone.

This whole thing is a bit disappointing.

Why are we different?

If you go back to school, you will bring us back too - how are we different from fourth grade?

You took a few layers and left them at home.

It sucks a bit.

I personally prefer to go back to class.

What does your agenda look like?

He gets up, washes his face, brushes his teeth and sits down in front of the screen.

Zoom classes begin at 8:30 a.m. and last until 1:30 or 2:30 p.m., with one or two breaks.

Then I play some games on the computer, do workouts: go for a run or do strength training, and in the evening sometimes meet up with friends, depending on whether there is a closure.

When there was a closure I had a harder time.

When are you going to sleep?

1:30 at night.

Is there anything good in this situation?

I have more control over my agenda.

It can also be in a good direction that you are more independent and arrange things for yourself.

Studying is more difficult on your own, but if you practice then it can also be easier.

What is the most difficult?

It is clear to me that I would have learned a lot more if I had been in class and not from home.

And I would also see more friends.

Opening a zoom camera?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

What did the last year look like?

Without lying, I had a bad academic year.

I was not able to realize the potential I could as a student.

Learning at home has made me less good at learning, it is hard for me to listen in class.

And one of the reasons is that I'm constantly alone at home.

It is very ironic that when I was in school I wanted to study at home, and now I am at home and want to study in school.

I had a drop in grades this year.

I was a very good student and now I am less, I do not think I can learn the material properly.

Socially it is not that my friends are different, but our meetings are different.

Even when we meet I wear a mask and it feels distant.

What does your agenda look like?

Not good.

I get up at 9: 15-9: 30, a quarter of an hour before class starts.

During class I'm in bed, I'm not opening a camera.

I connect but I don’t really listen, mostly so they won’t signal me absences.

Classes last until 1:30 p.m., sometimes later, depending on when the first lesson begins.

My parents work from home, but I feel like I'm alone.

Basically I am in my room all day and only go out when I want to eat something.

The rest of the day I try as much as I can to go out and meet up with friends, or I'm doing homework, or I'm just staying in bed and messing with my monitors and electronic devices.

When are you going to sleep?

it changes.

Sometimes at 11pm and sometimes at 3am

is there anything good in this situation?

The advantage of this period is that I learned to appreciate every little thing - every meeting with friends makes me happy, I once took it for granted and now it is one of the things that is more important to me.

I also appreciate family vacations more.

What is the most difficult?

All the restrictions there are and that is that we do not study together.

As a child or as a person you need company and people to be successful and not to feel alone.

Opening a zoom camera?

Depends on the rate.

If it's a lesson I like, like science, I'm opening a camera.

But in a literature class or classes that I am less interested in, I do not open a camera.

What did the last year look like?

I returned to Israel in December 2019, after living with the family for a few years in San Francisco, USA. I started studying at a new school and after a few months Corona started. Studies returned in May, again for a few weeks, where we managed to study in capsules, 3 hours a day, several times a week. The third we went back to study zoom, and there are meetings of a few hours a week outside at school.

What does your agenda look like?

At 8:30 we start studying zoom until 13:30. Five days a week. After that we have lunch, do a class of "youth Science seeker "Zoom, private lessons sometimes and lots of Xbox. Besides some walks outside and when there is hot weather then I do sap.

When do you go to bed?

Go to bed later than a normal school day. Instead 21: 00-22: 00, so now Fall asleep at 11pm.

Is there anything good in this situation? That

I do not have to take the bus to school and get up early. Besides the parents are here next to me so they can help if I need to.

What is the hardest?

Much harder to learn and concentrate on zoom. I am learning French For example and it is very difficult to learn through the zoom.Besides the social aspect is difficult, especially since I moved to a new class this year and I do not know the students in the class. When we meet in the school for

A few hours, we play football and get to know each other and it's fun.

Opening a zoom camera?

Always open

What did the last year look like?

Very strange.

This whole period is a bit difficult both with the fact that we do not go to school and with this disease that came to us like this, it is also scary.

Socially it is difficult because there is no place to meet.

At our age we really need the company, it is a very important part of our life.

I'm new to school and I hardly know my class, I was able to get to know some of the zooms, but it's not something that's really friends. It sucks because if some of the students brought back then I believe they can bring us back too. studies have subjects that I improved in fact, that I got myself into such food of investing more. I do not allow myself to fall into a state of deterioration because of learning at home, I try to raise myself, but a lot more fun to learn together.

how looks your agenda?

the lessons begin At 8:00, so I get up at 7:00 and get ready for class like I would get organized for school, prepare everything I need, go into the computer and sit at the desk. I do not allow myself to sit on the bed in classes. I study until 1:00 and in part From the days until 15:00 and then trying to keep myself busy with all sorts of things - training, acting lessons I learn in a digital studio. I meet less with friends because of the Corona interest and not everyone can always meet, but occasionally do meet. It's mostly meetings. With friends from the previous school and my locality.

when are you going to sleep?

22: 30-23: 00.

Is there anything good in this situation?

The advantage of studying from home is that we see more sides that we did not know ourselves - it requires more maturity and responsibility and we learn new things about ourselves.

What is the most difficult?

The hardest part is socially, and also the fear of the corona.

This whole period is scary and stressful.

Do you open a zoom camera?

Yes always.

I make sure of that.

Ella Iluz, 14, a ninth-grade student at Mazkeret Batya

What did the last year look like?

I manage to zoom in and feel like I do manage to learn and listen in class, even though I only see teachers on screens and hear them through speakers, and sometimes there are internet glitch issues that the class may not work because of.

Overall, I had a good year, also socially.

I always study with a good friend and meet with friends and try to maintain a routine that also includes meetings with friends, so that I will not be alone all the time.

Because all this situation makes us stay more at home, be careful and keep our distance.

During the closure I would meet with friends and we would go for walks in the fields near Mazkeret Batya, we also had a picnic there.

It was really fun.

What does your agenda look like?

On a normal day the zoom starts at 8:30 so I get up 30-45 minutes before, eat and start zooming.

During breaks I prepare food for myself, or I have some time to be on the phone.

A lot of our tasks are on the computer and in classroom, so it's in front of a screen, and sometimes I have a dance class in Zoom or I meet up with girlfriends.

when are you going to sleep?

22:30 and north.

Is there anything good in this situation?

There are benefits to distance learning.

For example we learned to develop new talents and ways to learn and the whole issue of computer use has improved.

In the first closure I had a lot of time with the family and also got a bitch, "Corona bitch", which is something I wanted for a long time and this year it came true.

What is the most difficult?

When there is a closure I am limited where can I go and what can I do.

I have no freedom.

I have a family abroad that I have not seen for a year and a half because the field is closed and at the moment I can not get vaccinated. In a closure that was I did not go anywhere for 6 weeks, except for the fields near the settlement. I do not have this freedom. There on the bus with friends, and we did not have this option for a long time, or go to the sea to surf.

Opens a zoom camera?

I personally open almost always. It respects the teachers, and when I do it there is also some requirement of myself that I should sit. And I think it It should be clear that whoever has the option in terms of conditions and home - should open a camera. I can understand that there are days that feel bad and do not want to open a camera, but in general I think it should be opened.

Jonathan (Yoyo) Gertie Axelrod, 13, eighth grade student in Tel Aviv

What did the last year look like?

mozar.

I get up later, I have no friends to be around and talk to.

Most of my friends live more than a mile away from me and in closures I could not see them, and we mostly communicate through games.

I moved school from 7th to 8th grade so it's hard at all.

The biggest difficulty is that we are opened and closed, and I do not know if I am going to meet my friends at school.

I get up in the morning and not sure about anything.

What does your agenda look like?

I get up ten minutes before the zoom that starts at nine-thirty.

Finishing at 2pm and during breaks I try to eat fast and go to the bathroom.

At home there are more temptations and if I turn off the zoom window for a moment I am already in another world, playing.

After school I try to go to a baseball class at Sportek, assuming there is no closure.

When are you going to sleep?

at midnight.

On weekdays 22: 30-23: 00.

Is there anything good in this situation?

It's a bit like freedom.

Half freedom.

Staying home all the time, and there is no such thing as going out to school and getting on a bus.

I never object to a vacation, but it's too much already.

What is the most difficult?

I went through school during quarantine and I can not connect well.

The maximum I do is between breaks and correspondence with friends, but I can not go out and play with them in the yard.

It is also difficult to learn through the zoom and as I said the temptation is great when learning from home.

Opening a zoom camera?

In most cases I open the camera, sometimes not.

It's a little weird because it feels like everyone's looking at you, and it's stressful.
