(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 23 - Over 140 scientists from all over the world, including the ethologist Jane Goodall, have sent a letter to the EU in support of the European popular initiative law (Ice) to gradually eliminate the use of cages in Union farms.
Among the signatories of the letter there are also 12 Italians.
The 'End the Cage Age' European citizens' initiative has already received 1.4 million signatures.
Dr Goodall, an ethologist and conservationist, a staunch supporter of the end of the use of cages in animal farms, commented: "Most people today understand that birds are sentient beings. We have seen hens rescued from factory farms" and "there is no doubt that life enclosed in a small cage causes great suffering. The EU must act on behalf of the millions of chickens and other animals treated in this cruel way ".
The 21 Italian associations that are part of the "End the Cage Age" coalition are: Amici della terra Italia, Animal Aid, Animal Equality, Animal Law Italia, Animalisti Italiani, CIWFItalia Onlus, Confconsumatori, ENPA, HSI / Europe - Italy, IlFatto Alimentare , Jane Goodall Institute Italy, LAC - League for the abolition of hunting, LAV, Legambiente, National League for Dog Defense, LEIDAA, OIPA, Animalist Party, TerraNuova, Terra!
