The corona pandemic has an enormous impact on our mood, and psychological suffering is also increasing.

This is shown by the days of absence in 2020, among other things.

The current situation will probably not pass anyone without a trace.

Some citizens even have to fear for their livelihood because the lockdown will result in temporary store closures.

But the corona pandemic and the associated restrictions are also affecting employees.

In 2020 there was an increase in absenteeism

due to mental illness, as the commercial health insurance company (KKH) informs.

According to insurance data from the Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH)

, employees were on

sick

leave for an average of 43.7 days due to depression *, chronic exhaustion and the like last year

.

That is 4.2 days more than in 2019. The KKH recorded the strongest increase with 7.1 days in Thuringia, the lowest in Brandenburg and Hesse with 2.1 days each.

Doctors most commonly diagnosed depressive disorders, reactions to severe stress and adjustment disorders, and chronic fatigue and anxiety disorders.

In 2020, employees were on average significantly longer on sick leave

"We cannot tell from the numbers whether the increased absenteeism is directly related to the Corona crisis," says KKH business psychologist Antje Judick.

Isolation and quarantine measures as well as the associated changes in everyday professional and private life left their mark in any case.

Because many working people are still under constant stress due to a lack of childcare, caring for relatives in need, increasing isolation and fear of livelihood due to short-time work, insolvency and job loss.

But also the handling of the previously unknown situation and the helplessness often experienced would create great uncertainty.

Antje Judick explains

that such drastic changes could have an additional negative effect

,

especially for people with mental health

problems.

"And the fact that employees are on average on sick leave significantly longer shows that there are apparently more lengthy cases than before the pandemic."

The number of calendar days

with a medical certificate from compulsorily insured and voluntarily insured members of the KKH was evaluated

, new for 2020 - excluding unemployed and pensioners.

The KKH commercial health insurance company is one of the largest national statutory health insurance companies with more than 1.6 million insured persons, according to the KKH press release.
