Electricity, gas, heating oil - energy costs rose more sharply at the beginning of the year than in over ten years.

The comparison test shows more details.

Energy costs * in Germany have risen faster within a month than in the past ten years.

This is shown by an analysis of the comparison

portal Verivox

.

The costs for heating, electricity and fuel increased by almost seven percent at the turn of the year.

Significant increase in energy prices

Private consumers in Germany had to accept a significant increase in energy prices in the new year.

Overall, the energy costs for a model household in December 2020 were 3,429 euros per year.

In January 2021, the same amount of energy already cost 3,665 euros.

This corresponds to a

price increase of 6.9 percent (236 euros) within one month

.

"The main price drivers were the expiry of the temporary VAT reduction, the introduction of the CO2 price and wholesale prices, which initially plummeted in the wake of the corona pandemic and are now picking up again," says Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox.

Energy costs: Increase in heating and electricity costs

Heating oil rose by 12 percent on a monthly basis.

Whereas 966 euros were due for 20 hectoliters of heating oil in December, it was 1,082 euros in January.

Gas prices have also increased.

Here the costs for 20,000 kilowatt hours rose from 1,106 euros to 1,162 euros.

This corresponds to an increase of 5 percent.

Since more households heat with gas than with heating oil,

heating costs rose

by 7.2 percent

on a volume-weighted average

With the introduction of the CO2 tax on climate-damaging fuels, heating and refueling have become much more expensive.

To compensate, consumers should be relieved of electricity.

The federal government has capped the levy for the expansion of renewable energies.

The average

electricity costs of a private household

with an annual consumption of 4,000 kWh nevertheless increased from 1,136 euros in December to 1,171 euros in January.

That is an increase of 2.5 percent.

If you factor out the increase in VAT, the price increase for electricity remains

0.5 percent

Calculation of the average development of energy prices

The Verivox energy cost index shows the average development of energy prices for a German household.

The

costs for heating, electricity and mobility are taken into account in a quantity-weighted manner

.

The base month of the energy cost index is January 2015. The base is a three-person model household with an annual heat requirement of 20,000 kilowatt hours (kWh), electricity consumption of 4,000 kWh and an annual mileage of 13,300 kilometers.

In the area of heating, the prices for gas and heating oil are calculated according to the number of households.

The average electricity price corresponds to the separately calculated Verivox electricity consumer price index, in which the prices of the local basic suppliers as well as the 30 most important national providers are used.
