Hundreds of thousands of female students in France will no longer have to spend their monthly quota on the purchase of sanitary pads: the Minister for Higher Education and Research, Frédérique Vidal, has announced that from September they will be free and available in special distributors in all universities and student residences.
"We aim - said the minister during a meeting with students in Poitiers, in central-western France - to put into operation 1,500 dispensers of sanitary pads and a free ticket for all when returning to the faculties in September".
The decision was adopted in the context of the fight against the precariousness of young university students and after a work of consultation between the minister, parliamentarians and student representatives.
According to a study, one third of female students would be in need to be able to buy intimate hygiene products.
The free use of sanitary pads was also a commitment made by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, last December.
At the end of November, Scotland was the first country in the world to make the decision to make sanitary pads free in all public buildings.
