Sanitary towels and tampons will soon be available free of charge at French universities.
University Minister Frédérique Vidal announced that in the coming weeks vending machines for period products will be set up in the health service at universities and in student dormitories, according to a letter from her ministry.
With the »Rentrée«, the beginning of the courses in autumn, the distributors for period products should be available on campus and contain environmentally friendly articles.
As Vidal wrote on Twitter, one in three people in higher education is affected by period poverty.
This means that she doesn't always have enough money to buy sanitary towels or tampons.
According to a recent study among French students, 13 percent of the more than 6500 respondents had to choose between buying period products and another good that is essential for life.
A third said they needed financial help to have enough period products.
In addition to women, the study also interviewed trans men and non-binary people, i.e. people who are outside the division into two genders.
