(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 24 - A rare van Gogh from a private French collection will be auctioned at the end of March in Paris, beaten by Sotheby's. The auction house announces it, specifying that it is a canvas from the Parisian period with a street scene in Montmartre, painted in 1887. It is an oil on canvas measuring 46 cm by 61. The auction estimate varies between 5 and the 8 million euros.

This is a rather rare subject for Van Gogh. The painting is mentioned in catalogs, but has never been exhibited to the public since 1920, when it was bought by a French family who now put it up for sale. Before being auctioned in Paris, the work will be exhibited in Amsterdam and Hong Kong.
