Ecuador: clashes in prisons, the toll rises to 75 dead prisoners

The toll from yesterday's clashes between rival gangs in three prisons in Ecuador's overcrowded prison system has risen to at least 75 dead prisoners. The authorities announced it today. There are 21 people in the prison of the western port city of Guayaquil, another 33 in the prison in southern Cuenca and eight in the central Latacunga, according to Edmundo Moncayo, director of the government agency for managing Snai prisons. The police stressed that "the situation is being managed" in prisons. Police officers are carrying out operations to restore normality, while the military guards the external spaces of the structures.
