(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 24 - The European Commission has chosen: the Finnish Lahti is the new European Green Capital 2021.
Located in the lakes region, about 100 kilometers north-east of Helsinki in the southern bay of Lake Vesijärvi, Lahti represents a new model of sustainability in Europe, explains Visit Finland, the organization that deals with tourism promotion in Finland.
Lahti has in fact completely abandoned coal, and is a pioneer of the circular economy: currently, more than 99% of household waste is recycled and the city is heated only with recycled fuel and with certified local wood.
To date, Visit Finland explains in a statement, greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by 70% from 1990 levels. Lahti will become a carbon-neutral city by 2025 and aims to become a zero-waste city with a circular economy by 2050 .
Lahti, the note continues, is the smallest town and piùsettentrionale ever to win the award.
A recognition of the work done to become more and more ecological and sustainable.
A new green record for Finland, which has always distinguished itself for its constant commitment to preserve nature, encouraging an increasingly sustainable lifestyle.
