To date, according to an elaboration by the Gimbe Foundation, only 3 out of 100 elderly people have completed the anti-Covid vaccination and "the continuous downward revision of supplies, in just 2 months, has almost halved the doses foreseen for the first quarter which have plummeted from 28.3 to 15.7 million ". To date,

only 3 out of 100 elderly people have completed the anti-Covid vaccination

and "the continuous downward revision of supplies, in just 2 months, has almost halved the doses scheduled for the first quarter of 2021, which have fallen from 28.3 to 15, 7 million ".

This is highlighted by the new monitoring of

the Gimbe Foundation

which underlines how "a reduction of this magnitude, if on the one hand is attributable to production and delivery delays, on the other hand is affected by unrealistic procurement estimates of the original Plan".

But, as shown by the large difference in the speed with which vaccinations are made in the various regions,

the slowdown in administration is also worrying, linked to organizational difficulties.

As of February 24 (update at 8 am) over 1.34 million people had completed the vaccination cycle with the second dose, equal to 2.25% of the population, but with marked regional differences: from 1.58% in Abruzzo to 4 , 17% of the Public Administration of Bolzano.

The coverage of over 80s remains "low": out of over 4.4 million, only 380 thousand (8.6%) received the first dose and about 127 thousand (2.9%) also received the second.

Organizational difficulties also concern the vaccinations of the other categories.

"Only 14% of the doses of AstraZeneca, intended for teachers and law enforcement officers, were administered".

Also in this case, the regional differences are considerable: if Tuscany (64%), Valle d'Aosta (41.2%), Bolzano (37.6%) and Lazio (25%) administered at least a quarter of the doses delivered by AstraZeneca, two administered less than 1% and 5 Regions did not even start.

"From the first places in the ranking among the European countries conquered in the first phase of the vaccination campaign - explains Nino Cartabellotta, president of the Gimbe Foundation - Italy has lost numerous positions because not all the regions were ready".

To get out of the pandemic, he concludes, "a clear change of pace by the Draghi government is necessary".

In addition, the Foundation announces the latest independent monitoring on the progress of the pandemic.

After 4 weeks of stability in the number of new Covid-19 cases,

last week there was "a reversal of the trend with an increase that, at the national level, is close to 10%, a sign of the rapid spread of more contagious variants"

.

And in 41 provinces the increase in new cases is more than 20%.

In detail, in the week 17-23 February 2021, compared to the previous one, there was an increase in new cases (92,571 compared to 84,272, equal to + 9.8%), against a stable number of deaths (2,177 compared to 2,169 ).

On the other hand, there was a slight reduction in currently positive cases (387,948 compared to 393,686, equal to -1.5%), people in home isolation (367,507 compared to 373,149, equal to -1.5%) and hospitalizations with symptoms (18,295 compared to 18,463, equal to -0.9%), while intensive care recovered (2,146 compared to 2,074, equal to + 3.5%).

"The percentage increase in new cases compared to the previous week - states Cartabellotta - is the most sensitive indicator for identifying the numerous red lights that come on in the various Regions".

In particular, in the week 17-23 February in 74 provinces out of 107 (68.5%) there was a percentage increase in new cases compared to the previous week, with values that exceed 20% in 41 Provinces;

in 11 Regions the currently positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants increase and in 10 Regions the percentage increase in total cases rises.

"These data - comments Renata Gili, Head of Research on Health Services of the Gimbe Foundation - confirm that, in order to avoid more extensive lockdowns, strict restrictions must be introduced promptly in areas where sudden spikes occur. Tempting is very risky because the situation risks escaping but no".
