The consumer has the choice: a wide variety of brands offer FFP2 masks in supermarkets and online shops.

According to Stiftung Warentest, the following product is the best.

The second strict corona lockdown will be relaxed in Germany from March 1, 2021, but one thing remains: the FFP2 mask requirement in public transport and shops.

FFP2 masks are part of the particle-filtering half-masks that develop a filter performance of at least 94 percent - provided that they are properly seated.

And here there is a problem with some models

.

If the mask is not close enough to the face, potentially virus-contaminated air can escape or penetrate and promote a coronavirus infection.

In search of the best protective mask, Stiftung Warentest has now examined ten FFP2 masks with regard to their wearing comfort and their protective performance.

Only one product was able to convince across the board: the Aura 9320+ mask from the multi-technology group 3M

.

According to Stiftung Warentest: "The FFP2 mask from 3M was the only respiratory mask in the test to meet our most important test criteria without restriction: It fits well, is tight and enables comfortable breathing".

The only drawback: the price.

At 6.85 euros per mask, the FFP2 mask from 3M is the most expensive mask in the test.

The best FFP2 mask from the 3M brand beats the following face mask

In all ten FFP2 masks tested, the pure filter performance was high, as Stiftung Warentest informs.

All masks tested retained around 99 percent of the aerosol particles in the test, some even more

.

But some models made breathing difficult due to high resistance.

And also when it comes to the fit, some masks cannot convince 100 percent in the test.

The following FFP2 masks, for example, were often not close enough to the face, which impaired their protective effect:

  • The

    FFP2

    fine dust

    mask from Gebol is

classified by the Stiftung Warentest as “suitable with restrictions”, partly because the mask leaked in four out of ten test persons.

  • The FFP2 mask

    957000 from Hase Safety

was also recognized as "suitable with restrictions".

In three out of ten test persons it was not close enough to the face.

You can recognize a tight FFP2 respirator from the fact that it inflates when you exhale and contracts when you inhale.

The Stiftung Warentest classifies two drugstore FFP2 masks as "unsuitable"

Despite a high filter effect for aerosol particles, there are three FFP2 masks that the Stiftung Warentest classifies as "unsuitable" because they are too much of a hindrance to breathing.

This is a big problem, especially for people who have suffered from respiratory diseases or who are no longer quite as fit.

Since the Stiftung Warentest generally advises against the following models with low breathing comfort, they were no longer checked for their fit

:

  • Altapharma FFP2 masks from Rossmann

  • REF HS0501A from Hygisun

  • Mivolis FFP2 respirator from dm
