Golfo Paradiso is the name of the bay off Genoa, now coffins are floating in the heavenly turquoise water.
In a landslide part of the cemetery of the municipality of Camogli fell into the sea.
A video is circulating on Twitter showing how the seven-story urn wall and a small family chapel tumble into the depths.
Around 200 coffins are said to have ended up in the sea when it was demolished. The recovery is slow, firefighters use boats to search for the containers with the deceased. The Coast Guard has put oil booms in the bay, as they are normally used in environmental disasters. They are supposed to prevent coffins from drifting out to sea.
The security of the Ligurian cliffs has preoccupied residents for a long time. Most recently, the Italian state had promised millions in aid to secure the ledge on which the 150-year-old cemetery was located. Because of the fragile ground, hardly any visitors had dared to go to the front of the cemetery.
