The Deputy Director of the World Food Program in Congo, Rocco Leone, who survived the attack in which Ambassador Luca Attanasio, Carabiniere Vittorio Iacovacci and their driver were killed "is not in hospital and is fine".
WFP Deputy Communications Director Greg Barrow said in a press briefing.
"I cannot go into the details of the attack" but we are "ready to give all the information" and "we are working with all the investigators" so that "whoever perpetrated this crime is brought to justice".
Leone released a statement read by WFP's deputy director of communications, Greg Barrow, in a press briefing.
"The experience we had on Monday was tragic and traumatic and I cannot express the depth of the sadness I feel for the lost lives," Barrow continued reading the statement from Leone.
"With regard to the request to strengthen the contingent of carabinieri in charge of the protection of Ambassador Attanasio, the latter requested it in November 2018 due to the imminent presidential and national elections, scheduled for December 30 of the same year, which were held in a climate of great political and social tensions. This strengthening was effectively arranged for the required period ".
This can be read in a note from the Farnesina after the question was raised today in an article in La Stampa.
