In the competition between the supermarket chains, the Cologne-based company probably wants to reposition itself.

Cologne - The supermarket giant Rewe is adjusting its range.

As the group announced on Monday, packaging waste is to be reduced from March.

Rewe is leaving out the additional plastic lids of its own products, 500 gram cups of natural yoghurt and from April on all 500 gram cups of soy yoghurt of the own brands "ja!" And REWE Beste Wahl ".

A small measure that says it saves up to 69 tons of plastic waste annually.

In order to preserve the opened yoghurt, the Cologne company relies on a reusable solution.

A reusable lid made of platinum silicone is also for sale at a price of 99 cents (for two pieces).

Rewe is planning profound changes to packaging by the end of 2030

With the change, Rewe is reacting to the increasing environmental awareness in the population.

So far, Rewe only ranks fourth in the popularity ranking of supermarkets, as the Central German Brand Study 2020 shows.

It is conceivable that Rewe wants to secure an advantage over the better-placed competitors with the environmental offensive.

In Monday's announcement, Rewe gave deep insights into the environmental protection plans.

As the company announced, all private label sales packaging and service packaging are to be omitted or made more environmentally friendly.

According to the announcement, the plastic packaging of the own brands will also be recyclable by the end of 2025.

It can be assumed that customers will have to adjust to changes in the range, as the shelves are currently mainly filling products with plastic packaging.

Rewe: Edeka, Lidl and Aldi more popular

According to Rewe, in the past it was concerned with protecting the environment by eliminating plastic bags, plastic disposable dishes and plastic packaging for organic fruit and vegetables.

In recent years, however, the competition has caught up.

The development is also noticeable in the popularity ranking of supermarkets, in which Edeka, Lidl and Aldi are ahead of the Cologne-based company, according to the Central German brand study.

As the MDM describes, the majority of Germans associate the term sustainability with “environmentally friendly production, short transport routes, animal welfare aspects and less packaging material”.

With the reduction of packaging waste, Rewe is probably not only fighting for the environment, but also for customers who otherwise choose a competitor.
