MUSICAL COMEDY.

Timeless Emilie Jolie

At 8:55 pm, on France 5.

He had written the musical tale for his daughter Emilie, then aged 3.

"To have fun, and amuse her," he said in an interview.

Without suspecting for a second the success that awaited him.

To pay tribute to Philippe Chatel, its creator who died on February 19, France 5 has shaken up its programming and is broadcasting the show “Emilie Jolie” this Friday evening.

The record has sold 2.5 million copies, with more than 3,000 adaptations worldwide.

No need to introduce the little girl with the golden hair.

Her parents are out, she is left alone and afraid of the dark, all alone, in her bed.

So she takes a picture book.

And dive into it.

For forty years, his meeting with strange characters in the realm of dreams has seduced all generations of children.

The big bird, the hedgehog, the blue rabbits, the umbrella whales… Every song is a nugget.

The melodies, soft or more rhythmic, stay in the head.

The texts are of rare poetry, funny, touching and timeless.

Irresistible, even for parents.

The five-star cast of early versions also played a role in the success.

We find Julien Clerc, Henri Salvador, Sylvie Vartan or Georges Brassens in the very first, in 1979. Bashung, Johnny Hallyday, Maurane, Khaled or Zazie in 1997. The show broadcast this Friday evening, without this swarm of stars, is that of 2002, produced by Jean-Marc Ghanassia.

There are new characters there.

The magic operates just as much.

The show was a triumph, played from November to December 2002 in Mogador, before forty dates at the Grand Rex, and twice in the provinces.

The documentary “Gainsbourg, a whole Life” modestly returns to the intimate journey of this complete artist./Siècles Productions

At 9:05 pm on France 3.

What a marvel!

Whether or not you are a fan of the artist and musical documentaries, this “Gainsbourg, entire life” is an event not to be missed under any circumstances.

Told by the inhabited and suave voice of Romain Duris (a perfect choice), this complete and poetic film recounts the fate of Lucien Ginsburg, who became a legend of the song under the name of Serge Gainsbourg.

If this portrait, mounted on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his disappearance, begins with his burning love story with Brigitte Bardot, it modestly returns to the intimate journey of this complete artist.

His strength: a multitude of stunning unpublished archives (including fantastic studio sessions of his masterpiece "Initials BB"), the passionate confessions of Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg (but also of Andrew Birkin, brother of Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy and Thomas Dutronc) and breathtaking new audios.

Far, very far from the character of "Gainsbarre" of the 80s, from this caricature of himself, this film sweeps all the facets of one of the eternal figures of French culture.

Overwhelming.

COMEDY.

My friend, my love

At 9:05 pm, on France 4.

Friends for ten years, Julianne (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Dermot Mulroney) have often turned around without ever taking the plunge.

So when Michael gets engaged to another woman, Julianne sees red.

Jealous as a louse, she decides to derail the marriage.

But, meeting her rival, the adorable Kim (Cameron Diaz), Julianne realizes the magnitude of the task ...

Australian director Paul J. Hogan, then on the rise after the success of his touching “Muriel”, three years earlier, hits the mark again.

Everything is an assault of charm and playfulness in this "Marriage of my best friend", where each supporting role plays, around an irresistible Julia Roberts.

Note a very appropriate soundtrack and conducive to romantic reconciliations (with Diana King, Tony Bennett, or Jackie DeShannon, who will be the subject of an Oscar nomination. And that we are talking about a new adaptation of the story , but this time in a musical, which could see the light of day before the end of the year.

ANIMATION.

Vegetarianism and bullfighting

The bull Ferdinand has only one dream: to flee to live in the middle of nature./Blue Sky Studios

At 9.15 p.m., on C8.

In "Ferdinand", the story of a young Andalusian bull who does not like to fight, Carlos Saldanha, 52, co-director of the "Ice Age" saga and "Rio", or more recently producer of the Netflix series “The Invisible City”, confronts the family audience with astonishing themes.

Ferdinand, the animal, dreams only of fleeing to live in the heart of nature, rather than appearing in the arena in front of Spain's greatest matador.

Kidnapped, intelligent and funny, the film deals in particular with the problem of slaughterhouses, of their brutality.

Interviewed when his film was released, Carlos Saldanha did not consider at the time that his film was an indictment against carnivores.

“You can interpret Ferdinand like a vegan film,” he admitted.

But for him, “it is first and foremost a story told from the point of view of its main character: what bull could appreciate being sent to the slaughterhouse?

And the message is elsewhere: no matter what you have been predestined to do, don't let anyone impose your choices on you ”.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

DRAMA.

Royal

At 9:05 pm, on Chérie 25.

Henry VIII, the British monarch with six women, who lived in the 16th century, has inspired many fictions.

In “Two Sisters for a King”, he is still married to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who does not give him an heir.

Henri (Eric Bana) then takes Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson) as his mistress, before being seduced by his sister Anne (Natalie Portman).

A decision fraught with consequences, as much for the two women as for the crown of England ...

Fresco romantic flamboyant thanks to sets and costumes of any beauty, the film owes a lot to its cast, which relegates the tasteless realization of Justin Chadwick to the background.
