(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 26 - Seventy-five countries in the world, which produce 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, have made commitments to reduce them which will lead to an overall cut of just 1% in 2030 compared to 2010: for keeping temperatures within 1.5 degrees of pre-industrial levels (the optimal target of the Paris Climate Agreement) would require a 45% cut.

This was revealed in a preliminary report by the UNFCCC, the UN agency for the fight against climate change.

The UNFCCC report takes stock of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) commitments made by 75 of the 196 signatory countries to the Paris Agreement.

These are the countries that have so far communicated their plans to the UNFCCC, and which represent 30% of global emissions.

The still partial report on NDCs was prepared for the upcoming UN climate conference, COP26, to be held in Glasgow from 9 to 20 November.

The study shows that even though the majority of represented nations have increased ambitions to reduce emissions, the overall impact will only lead them to achieve a 1% reduction in 2030 compared to 2010. the UN climate research center) indicated that, to achieve the goal of increasing temperatures within 1.5 degrees, the reduction in emissions should be around 45%.

"This report shows that current levels of climate ambition are far from putting us on the path to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement," said Patricia Espinosa, UNFCCC executive secretary. "While we recognize the recent turn towards stronger action. climate change in the world, decisions to accelerate and expand action everywhere must be made now. "

Espinosa clarified that the report is "a snapshot, not a complete panorama" on NDCs, while Covid-19 poses challenging challenges for many nations in completing their 2020 commitments. He added that a second report will be released before the Cop26, and asked all countries (especially major greenhouse gas producers, which have not yet done so) to submit their data as soon as possible, so that their information can be included in the updated report.
