In Sweden, emergency services rescued four men from a hole in the ice of a frozen lake.

Despite resuscitation measures, the seniors between the ages of 65 and 75 could not be rescued, as the Swedish police announced.

The exact circumstances of death are still unclear.

But there are no signs of a crime, said a police spokeswoman for the newspaper "Aftonbladet".

It is also still unclear why the men went on the ice.

According to police reports, the authorities were alerted on Thursday evening about an emergency on a lake near Sävsjö around 200 kilometers east of Gothenburg.

Several ice accidents in one day

The incident was not the only ice disaster in Sweden on Thursday evening: three adults and a child broke through the ice of a lake near Ekerö near Stockholm, they were then taken to a clinic, as the TT news agency reported.

They were therefore all available before they were taken to the hospital.

Many lakes in Sweden have frozen over because of the cold in recent weeks.

However, temperatures have recently risen significantly, especially in southern Sweden, which has an impact on the thickness of the ice in many places and creates a risk of collapse.

Two weeks ago a 29-year-old broke into the ice while skating in Germany.

A passer-by tried to save him - and broke in himself.

The 29-year-old was finally taken out of the water by a diver, but the victim later died in hospital.
