The winner of the Sapir Prize for Literature has been announced: The author Sami Bardugo won a prize from the Lottery, for a total of NIS 150,000, for his book "Donkey".

The protagonist of the book is Ruslan Iskov, who was born in Azerbaijan and lives in Israel, who is asked to look after a donkey, and a strong bond develops between the two.

The nominees for the award were: Yosef Bar-Yosef, for his book "Father, Son, Grandma Dina" (published by the New Library);

Roi Chen for his book "Souls" (Crown);

Guy Witness for her book "Vicky Victoria" (Asia);

Sami Bardugo for his book "Donkey" (The New Library);

And Yaakov Chamir on his book "Nehemiah" (Yediot Seforim).

Each of the five candidates received a financial grant of NIS 40,000.

These were the judges' reasons for accepting a "donkey" for the nomination: "Sami Bardugo's' donkey 'illuminates corners of abandonment and neglect in a way that has not yet been done. His characters remain in their foreignness and thus also maintain their independence. "
