Jonah Hill played the chubby outsider in films like "Superbad" or "21 Jump Street".
His weight was also a frequent topic in the media - most recently when he lost a lot.
In an Instagram post, the American actor and director has now spoken about how much the reporting burdened him.
"I don't think I ever took off my T-shirt in the swimming pool before I was in my mid-thirties," Hill begins his Saturday post, "even in front of family or friends." Years of public ridicule added to his childhood insecurities.
The post is illustrated with a screenshot of a recently published article in the Daily Mail.
The British tabloid shows paparazzi pictures of Hill surfing the web and without a top.
But the actor combines the criticism of the tabloid media with a positive message.
In the meantime he stands above such images.
"I'm 37 now and I can finally love and accept myself," he writes.
He also wanted to encourage others who were also ashamed of their bodies.
"You are wonderful and super and perfect."
Hill received a lot of approval for his post: Within 24 hours, his Instagram post received more than a million likes.
On Twitter, those affected said they could understand the actor's words and congratulated him on his encouraging words.
"Jonah Hill is a legend," it says, for example, in a tweet that was once again liked a thousand times.
Especially since the advent of social networks, there has been a discussion about body shaming, i.e. the condescending handling of looks that deviate from the norm.
In the beginning it was mostly about female bodies, but for some years now male celebrities have also denounced body shaming.
In addition to Jonah Hill, who already spoke extensively about his weight on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, it also concerned, for example, "Aquaman" actor Jason Momoa, who was ridiculed by paparazzi for his supposed "Dad-Bod".
