There could be a change of strategy in Huawei, put to the test in the smartphone sector by the ban of the former Trump administration.
According to Reuters, the Chinese giant could focus on electric cars, some models would be on the launch pad already during the current year.
The newspaper explains that Huawei is said to be in talks with Changan Automobile (owned by the state) but also with other car manufacturers to be able to use their plants to produce the battery-powered cars.
At the moment Huawei denies it by explaining that it is not a car manufacturer, but that by exploiting its skills in the field of information technology it can aim to become a supplier of digital components for the automotive world.
According to data from analytics firm Gartner, Huawei's smartphone sales fell 41.1% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2020, with the company falling from third to fifth in the global ranking of device manufacturers.
The heavy American sanctions to which Huawei has been subjected have cut off access to the main supply chains, as well as the possibility of using the Android operating system of the American Google (in fact it is developing a proprietary one) on smartphones and forced it to sell part of its smartphone business to keep the brand alive, think of the sale last November of its subsidiary Honor which produced cheaper models.
