In recent months we have heard quite a bit of the phrase "brain fog", which is one of the cognitive symptoms reported by quite a few people who have been infected and contracted Covid-19.

It is a type of confusion or lack of sharpness of thought, and it is one of the persistent symptoms of corona, which sometimes accompanies patients even weeks and months after recovery.

Scientists still do not know exactly what causes the physiological cause of this disturbing symptom, but new research raises the possibility that it is caused by the migration of bone marrow cells to the brain, which interfere with blood flow to the cerebral cortex.

Older patients are those who frequently report the symptom of cerebral palsy, which includes disturbances in orientation (orientation), disturbance in the sense of consciousness, and general cognitive signal.

Postmortem autopsies performed on patients who died from corona and reported this symptom during their illness did not surprisingly show signs of chronic inflammation in the brain or neurological changes that can usually be seen in the brain rather than viral infections.

Brain blurring is manifested in orientation problems, confusion, and general cognitive fatigue.

In an attempt to crack the brain fog puzzle, researchers from Johns Hopkins University Hospital and Brigham Hospital for Women in Boston analyzed brain tissue taken from 15 patients who died from corona, most of whom exhibited symptoms of a neurological nature.

The researchers looked at the samples using a microscope, and found in five of them large cell nuclei in the capillaries of the cerebral cortex.

In an article published in the journal JAMA Neurology, the researchers explained that the cell nuclei found in the samples resemble mega-cryocytes in their structure, which are large bone marrow cells that produce platelets.

A special test they performed on the samples confirmed with the help of biological markers that they were indeed mega-cryocytes, and confirmed the researchers' belief that these were bone marrow cells that migrated to the brain.

How did they get there?

Although these cells were found in only five of the 15 samples tested (i.e. in a third of them), the researchers noted that the postmortem was performed only in certain and small areas of the brain of the bodies included in the study, so theoretically the presence of mega-cryocyte cells in the brain may be even greater.

The researchers also analyzed two samples from the brains of people who died without being infected with corona, where no bone marrow cells were found.

The researchers were surprised to see the large bone marrow cells in the cerebral blood vessels.

The researchers said that never before had bone marrow cells been found in the blood vessels in the brain and it is not clear how these cells got there in the cases examined.

However, although not everything is understood yet, according to the researchers, the appearance of mega-cryocytes in the brain may well explain the brain fog that characterizes Covid-19 disease, as these are large cells that are likely to disrupt or block the blood supply to the capillaries in the cerebral cortex, which may cause For cognitive impairment.

"We suspect that the damage caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus to the lungs produces chemical signals that cause mega-cryocytes to migrate from the bone marrow to the brain. When this happens, these large cells find a way to pass through the capillaries of the lungs and from there to the brain," explained David Nawen. In a press release.

"What we still do not know is whether these cells just drifted there with the bloodstream, or whether the disease caused some change in the blood vessels that caused them to get stuck there," he added.
