(ANSA) - BEIJING, 01 MAR - Several hundred pro-democracy supporters gathered this morning in front of the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court in Hong Kong in support of the 47 dissidents formally accused on Sunday by the police of subversion, based on the disputed law on national security imposed by Beijing on the former British colony.

Seriously found guilty, they could be sentenced to life imprisonment.

Some protesters chanted slogans including "Free All Political Prisoners" and "Stand with HongKong", others launched the "HungerGames" three-finger salute, used by democracy activists in Thailand and Myanmar.

A small group of pro-Beijing protesters, on the other hand, showed banners in support of the police, with one of the banners calling for "severely punishing the traitors".

Today's is among the largest protest demonstrations in recent months in the city, also struggling with the restrictions related to Covid-19, while Beijing's action to crush dissent is growing rapidly after pro-democracy protests and reforms. also violent, of 2019.
