In Orleans, trees now have a price

2021-03-01T10:16:26.237Z

The municipality has adopted the tree scale, an online calculation tool that allows you to assess the price of a tree in euros and protect it.

How much is a tree worth?

The municipality of Orleans has just settled the issue by adopting the tree scale, a calculation tool launched last September by the Plante & Cité association.

The objective is to better protect this heritage, which is essential for biodiversity and the well-being of city dwellers, ie 8,000 to 9,000 trees in Orléans.

“It happens that during works, trees are damaged, due to lack of attention on the part of developers and public works companies.

From now on, they will be notified of the value of the trees, and will have to pay if the trees are damaged.

I think that this should slow down more than one ”, explains Jean-Paul Imbault, the deputy in charge of the“ garden city ”.

€ 88,590 for a yew located near the town hall

The price of a tree takes into account many parameters, its species, its price in the nursery, its benefits for air quality and rainwater management, but also the inconvenience it causes, due to its health and dangerousness, management cost, etc., or even its size - the taller and wider it is, the more valuable it is - or its remarkable tree quality.

In Orleans, the blue trees unleash passion

The city, whose environment remains very mineral, thus calculated that a yew near the town hall was worth 88,590 € and a plane tree on the mails 10,510 €.

On the other hand, a sequoia which will have to be cut down soon in the city center has lost all value because it has suffered greatly from the work of the tram, which severed its roots, and is now in danger of collapsing.

In the future, elected officials hope that damage of this kind will be rarer, thanks to the application of this dissuasive scale which will also concern the rest of the territory of the Metropolis.
