A rock drummer loses his hearing in the middle of a tour in "Sound of Metal" - a powerful and crushing independent drama that does everything right.

On the one hand, it's a scary movie about a man whose life is suddenly taken from him.

On the other hand, this is a film about a former drug addict who tries to stay clean in the face of the randomness of existence.

On the other hand, it is also a heartbreaking love story about two lost people who saved each other.

On all sides, this is a smart, patient and reliable film that treats its characters with sensitivity and respect, and uses creative techniques to intensify the situations in which it deals.

The drummer Ruben is played by the British actor of Pakistani origin Riz Ahmad ("Night of the Event"), and his pulsating and exposed acting display is at the heart of the film and is its main attraction.

Ruben was a drug addict in the past, but in recent years has found stability and true love in the arms of Lulu (Olivia Cook) - a guitarist with a penchant for self-destruction, with whom he appears as part of a duo.

After a compact prologue of about ten minutes (dedicated to the routine of life "on the go"), Ruben suddenly begins to feel that his ears are blocked and that something is wrong.

A visit to the doctor shows that the situation will only get worse.

He keeps it a secret from Lulu and goes up to perform that evening anyway.

It did not end well.

Now the overwhelmed majority no longer have a choice.

His life is falling apart and he needs urgent help.

This one comes in the person of Joe (the anonymous and excellent Paul Reissy), the director of a hearing aid center.

Slowly, Ruben stops denying the reality that was forced on him and begins to get used to his new situation.

He learns to speak sign language and develops connections with the inhabitants of the place, but will he succeed in defeating the demons that continue to haunt him?

"Metal Sounds," which came to the screen after a process that lasted more than a decade, is Darius Marder's first film as a director, and it is clear that a lot of thought has been invested in it.

The frugal and precise writing does not make shortcuts, and the dramatic climactic scenes, which use the documentary-like style familiar from the Darden Brothers' films, are authentic, painful, and incredibly effective.

Meanwhile, the way the film goes "into the ears" of its protagonist - absolutely brilliant.

Instead of just showing us the events from Ruben's point of view, Marder also plays them for us from his "hearing point", which is good for illustrating Ruben's mental state.

This technique also plays a major role in the beautiful and heartbreaking ending scene, which somehow manages to be both very sad and hopeful.

Wonderful ending.

Bomb film.
