After a truck accident, several hundred canisters filled with motor oil burst on Autobahn 44 in North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to initial findings, the truck hit a guardrail near Jülich in the morning and rolled over, the police said.
The 14-ton truck then remained lying on the roof.
Rescue workers brought the 46-year-old driver, who was heading towards Mönchengladbach, to a hospital.
The police assumed that cleaning work would continue into the evening because of the oil on the roadway.
The motorway had to be completely closed.
According to a spokesman, emergency services tried to divert the traffic and clear the traffic jam.
