Zhao also won the directing trophy, only as the second woman in the history of the Golden Globes.
The young German hope Zengel had followed the awarding of the award in a live broadcast from Berlin.
Because of the corona pandemic, the show ran largely in online format instead of the usual crowded ballroom in Beverly Hills.
Comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the ceremony from separate stages in California and New York.
The winners were connected by video
In the western "Neues aus der Welt" (News from the World), the schoolgirl played an orphaned girl who was raised by an indigenous people at the side of Oscar winner Tom Hanks.
Zengel made her English-language debut, directed by Paul Greengrass.
The role earned her a lot of attention in Hollywood.
The young star had his first big success two years ago with the German film »Systemsprenger«.

As in 2006, the Briton had traveled through the USA, got into conversation with people and involved them in sometimes funny or revealing situations.
His first "Borat" appearance had also brought him the trophy.
US actress and singer
Andra Day
, who
embodies jazz singer Billie Holiday

"The United States vs. Billie Holiday"
, was named best drama actress.
In the men's ranks,
Chadwick Boseman was
posthumously recognized for his final role in the jazz drama
"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
.
Boseman died of cancer last August at the age of 43.
In the “Best Non-English Language Film” category, the family drama “Minari” by US director Lee Isaac Chung won, bringing in his own experience as a child of Korean immigrants in the rural US state of Arkansas.
With »Minari«, shot mainly in Korean, films from Italy, France and Denmark were in the running.

The British actor Kaluuya was honored for his role in the film
"Judas and The Black Messiah"
and thus prevailed against film greats such as

At the virtual acceptance of the award, Kaluuya paid tribute to the US civil rights activist and Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, whom he embodies in the film.
"I hope later generations can see how brilliantly he fought, how brilliantly he spoke, and how brilliantly he loved," he said.
