Ms. Ostroff, most people see Spotify as a music streaming service, but as the content manager you are increasingly shifting the focus towards podcasts.
What you offer used to be called radio.
Ostroff:
Everything old will be new again at some point.
Millennials and members of Generation Z had absolutely no relation to talk radio, which once grew up in the United States.
Recorded narratives and conversations are a new concept for them.
At the same time, we have an audio library that is very broadly based.
I recently asked myself whether we actually offer a podcast on the subject of woodworking.
I found 15.
SPIEGEL:
Who should listen to all of this?
Ostroff:
I don't think we've reached the peak yet, there are countless genres that are still underdeveloped.
Most of the markets are not as far away as Germany, we have huge success here, for example with Jan Böhmermann's podcast »Fest & Flauschig«, from which we can learn internationally.
Germany is our guiding star.
But even in the early days of American radio there were creative radio plays such as "The Shadow", a kind of predecessor to "Batman".
Aside from books, podcasts are the only medium where you have to use your imagination.
