Marilena, the heroine who offered her life to save an 8-year-old boy

The 26-year-old veterinary doctor was an expert swimmer, but died when her kayak was wrecked in the icy waters of Lake Cardiel, in Santa Cruz.

María Alicia Martínez (66) speaks from the deepest sadness, but with pride, of her daughter Marilena Bossio (26), who offered her life to save an 8-year-old boy after a storm broke out in Lake Cardiel, from Santa Cruz, and a kayak excursion will end in tragedy.

Two other people died and a firefighter is missing.

Marilena was a native of Río Tercero and in 2019 she received a veterinary medical degree from the National University of Río Cuarto (UNRC).

He had traveled to the south of the country in search of a job in his specialty within the career that was "large animals."

After hearing the terrible news, María Alicia and other members of her family immediately traveled to Gobernador Gregores, the closest town to the place where the incident occurred.

Nora Trotti is a teacher at the UNRC's Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine and was Marilena's teacher in one of the last subjects of the young woman's degree.

In the School Hospital of the Faculty, the student gave herself entirely to the practices with the clinical cases of large animals.

Trotti maintained that, according to the communication she had with other Marilena's companions, the young woman was "perfectly aware" of what she did when offering her own life preserver to an 8-year-old boy who managed to save his life in the tragedy of the lake.

The teacher pointed out that the intention of the young woman was to get a job in the South and stay there to have her first work and life experience.

The teacher warned that Marilena's attitude in the tragic episode of Lake Cardiel is not something that surprises those who knew her.

"We are not surprised, because his quality as a person was like that," he said.

María Alicia traveled to Santa Cruz as soon as she received the terrible news of her daughter's death.

This Sunday he arrived at Governor Gregores and had the opportunity to see his daughter's body before the rigorous autopsy was carried out.

The rescuers found three victims dead and are still looking for the body of Javier Barría Peralta, 29, a police firefighter corporal and brother of Daniel Barría Peralta (33), who died, and of the provincial deputy Claudio Barría Peralta (36) , who managed to survive.

In the incident recorded on Saturday afternoon, Marilena Bossio and Raquel Elsa Martínez (49) also died.

Meanwhile, Claudio and Mateo Barría were rescued alive, as well as John Maximiliano Hoffman (28), Martínez's son.
