The lawyer for the former President of the French Republic Nicolas Sarkozy has announced that her client is appealing his 3-year sentence


“Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy is presumed innocent and he is more so than ever, and he will demonstrate his innocence before the court of appeal.

»At the end of the verdict of the Paris judicial tribunal condemning the former President of the French Republic to 3 years in prison, including one year closed, his lawyer spoke.

"This judgment provokes my incomprehension, but it also provokes my indignation",

exclaimed Me Jacqueline Laffont.

Nicolas Sarkozy became on Monday the first former president of the Fifth Republic sentenced to prison, to one year for corruption and influence peddling in the so-called "wiretapping" affair.

Before him, only his former mentor Jacques Chirac had been sanctioned by justice in December 2011. But he had been sentenced to two years in prison, in particular for embezzlement of public funds, in the case of fictitious jobs in the city of Paris.

Nicolas Sarkozy, who has always claimed to have never committed "the slightest act of corruption", will appeal against this conviction.

After this judgment which arouses in him "incomprehension" and "indignation", the former head of state "is calm but determined to continue the demonstration of his innocence", assured his lawyer Jacqueline Laffont.

The judges pronounced the same sentence for the former high magistrate Gilbert Azibert and the historical lawyer of the ex-president, Thierry Herzog, accompanied for the latter by a professional ban of five years.

Azibert and Herzog were also found guilty of breach of professional secrecy.

The advice of the two men told AFP that they too had lodged an appeal which is suspensive, as for Mr. Sarkozy.
