"It will be hard, it will be bitter and for some hard to believe": This is how presenter Sophie Passmann introduced "Men's Worlds"

Racism, sexism, homophobia: these topics can be found several times among the 69 nominations for the 57th Grimme Prize.

From more than 850 submissions, the commissions selected this year's favorites for the 16 Grimme Awards in the categories of information and culture, fiction, entertainment and children and youth.

The winners will be announced on May 11, 2021.

The award ceremony is scheduled for August 27, 2021.

"The nominations prove once again that especially those productions that break with conventions, take up socio-political issues and challenge the audience, are trend-setting for television," says the message from the Grimme Institute.

In the entertainment category, the “Men’s Worlds” edition of the format “15 Minutes Joko & Klaas” moderated by Sophie Passmann was nominated as well as a racism edition of the “Caroline Kebekus Show”.

In the “Children & Youth” category, “Masel Tov Cocktail” and “Kuntergrau” can hope for the most important German TV award, which deal with anti-Semitism and gay hatred.

In the fiction category, the film »Forever Summer 90« as well as the series »Unorthodox«, »The Last Word«, »MaPa« and »Dignity« were nominated.

"Here the commission convinced the examination of their own identity and reality in a realistic and emotional, sometimes dark, sometimes humorous way, with creative and unusual formats," it continues.

The corona pandemic was also taken up in terms of content and design in numerous productions.

The nominees would have tied in with everyday situations in video conferences and on the sofa ("indoors"), on the other hand, serious problems such as domestic violence ("@ Kalinka08 - report please") or the situation in old people's and nursing homes ("separation at the end of life") processed.

The special award for a special journalistic achievement beckons three employees of public broadcasters.

The nominees are Xenia Böttcher, ARD Central America correspondent, Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim for her radio format »maiLab« and Isabel Schayani from WDR for her reporting from Moria.

“The culture, film and television industry looks back on a difficult year full of restrictions,” says the director of the Grimme Institute, Frauke Gerlach: “This year's nominations also show us that by dealing creatively with the situation, through great commitment and flexibility on all sides touching, captivating and unique television moments were created.
