Every fifth person in the world suffers from a hearing impairment, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) published on the occasion of International Hearing Day starting today (Wednesday).

The global hearing report shows that 430 million people worldwide now need rehabilitation in the face of hearing loss.

This figure does not include those with mild hearing loss or hearing loss to unilateral deafness, who also face many challenges and need a therapeutic response as needed.

The data also show that a significant proportion of hearing loss in children can be prevented - about 60 percent of them.

According to the report, the rate of those dealing with disabilities will continue to rise and the expectation is that by 2050 every fourth person will face hearing problems.

Nearly 80 percent of the world's hearing-impaired people live in low- and middle-income countries.

Most of them do not have access to health services in the field.

Every year, International Hearing Day is celebrated on March 3, led by the International Hearing Forum (WHF) of the World Health Organization (WHO), with the aim of raising awareness and placing the importance of hearing and hearing loss, its prevention, treatment and coping in public and professional discourse.

The organization "Bakol", the representative organization of the hard of hearing and deaf in Israel, represents Israel in this forum and brings the data.

Hearing loss increases the chance of dementia

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics published on the occasion of Hearing Day, about 700,000 people in Israel, who are 12 percent of those aged 20 and over, have some degree of hearing impairment, and as expected, the proportion of hearing impaired increases with age: 46 percent of those aged 75 and over have difficulty hearing.

According to Damien Kalman, CEO of the organization "In the Voice", "hearing loss causes a significant impairment in the ability to communicate with the environment - with family, work and all living environments - and is too often accompanied by feelings of stress, frustration, loneliness, depression and other illness." “Optimal hearing restoration can reduce these effects.

Without it, for example, the chance of developing dementia may increase by 40 percent among people with hearing loss. "

The health organization estimates that the estimated economic cost of untreated hearing loss worldwide is about $ 1 trillion and notes that innovative, economically effective and technological solutions (such as hearing aids and hearing aids) and clinical can improve the lives of most people with hearing loss.

Millions are already benefiting from them.

The double price of hearing impairment

"Hearing loss has double prices: prices regarding the health and well-being of those who face it and economic prices as a result of the damage to the media and the consequences of hearing loss on their integration into education, training and employment," explains Arik Steiner, CEO of Sonova Israel (formerly Steiner Hearing Aids).

The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050, about 2.5 billion people will suffer from hearing loss at all levels, of which about 700 million will need hearing rehabilitation, due to an expected increase of more than 50 percent in the number of people with moderate to severe hearing loss.

Target: To reduce by 20% the incidence of chronic ear diseases and hearing loss in children by 2030. A girl undergoes an ear test (Photo: ShutterStock)

The health organization has set future goals as part of the plans for early detection of hearing loss among newborns (hearing screening among newborns, held in Israel in medical centers since 2010), and the eligibility of adults for hearing aids (hearing aids and implants) will be expanded by 20 percent each. Another target of a relative reduction of 20 percent in the incidence of chronic ear diseases and in cases of untreated hearing loss in children aged 5-9.
