As real data from worldwide vaccination campaigns against covid-19 began to accumulate, we were all very pleased to see that the efficacy percentages of the vaccines exceeded expectations and trial results, providing impressive protection at high percentages.

According to data from the vaccination campaign in Israel, Pfizer's vaccine prevents serious illness and death by 99 percent.

But not everyone has the vaccine as effective.

Yesterday it was reported that in people with significant obesity, two doses of the vaccine resulted in the production of a smaller amount of antibodies by up to 50 percent, compared to people with normal weight who were vaccinated with two doses.

This emerges from a study conducted among medical staff in Italy who were vaccinated with two doses of the corona vaccine developed by Pfizer.

Italian researchers have also speculated that obese people may need to receive a third booster dose of Pfizer's vaccine in order to develop a sufficient level of antibodies to protect against Covid-19 infection.

People with obesity are more likely to get more severe corona and get intensive care.

This is not the first time that obesity has emerged as one of the problematic risk factors in the context of both corona and vaccines.

Even at an early stage of the global epidemic it became clear that people suffering from obesity are more vulnerable to the corona virus.

Their chances of developing a serious illness and higher complications, as well as their chances of mortality.

Whereas previous studies on the efficacy of various vaccines have also indicated less immune efficacy in overweight people.

Obesity and corona

Data collected around the world marked early obesity as a risk factor for severe morbidity in Corona.

For example, a study in the UK found that over 70 per cent of corona patients hospitalized in intensive care units suffer from some form of obesity (overweight, obesity or severe obesity).

One hypothesis about the vulnerability of obese people is that their immune system functions less well.

Obesity causes a higher than normal level of inflammation on a regular basis and sometimes causes the immune system to be in a state of constant overload.

Immune cells secrete more inflammatory substances, such as cytokines for example, and thus a very acute inflammatory response is created in the body, which can cause a 'cytokine storm', which eventually aggravates the patient's condition and can even lead to his death.

Past experience has shown that hepatitis and influenza vaccines, for example, produce a weaker immune response in obese people.

Another explanation for the increased risk of obese people dealing with corona is that obese people have more cells in the body that need an oxygen supply, which means there is less oxygen for other organs.

"As the infection spreads and worsens, infecting more and more cells, the requirement for oxygen in the tissues is much higher in obese people than in thin people," explained Dr Dayan Salaya, a lecturer in organism and cell metabolism at the University of Reading in the UK. "The fat body kneels under the lack of oxygen to its vital organs."

Vaccines are less effective on obese people

Data on people with obesity up to 50 percent less antibody to corona following the completion of 2 vaccine doses did not knock any researcher out of the chair.

Already in the early stages of vaccine development, experts have estimated that their effectiveness may be lower in obese people.

This is because this is what past experience has taught them.

In obese people there is a tendency for high levels of inflammation and overload on the immune system.

Past studies have found that vaccines for influenza and hepatitis B, for example, have reduced efficacy in adults with obesity, making this population more susceptible to morbidity and severe complications, including systemic failure and death.

A May 2017 study found that the response of antibodies after hepatitis B vaccine was significantly lower in obese adults relative to normal-weight adults.

Another study from that year found that obese adults who received the flu vaccine were more likely to develop flu or flu-like illness than normal-weight adults vaccinated with the same vaccine.
