A current study by the Bonn Research Institute on the Future of Work (IZA) comes to the conclusion that the Corona Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance by Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) contributes to more home offices *.

In addition, women seem to be less well equipped with computers, cell phones or office chairs when working from home than men.

The study is based on a representative forsa survey of employees from February.

How well do employers actually equip their employees in the home office?

Not as bad as the study reveals.

85 percent provide employees with a computer, laptop or tablet, 44 percent get a smartphone.

Almost a third get apps or programs for their private computers.

Only a small proportion of ten percent also receive office furniture such as an office chair from their employer.

But some went completely empty - eight percent of the employees.

The gender differences were highlighted as remarkable in the study: While six percent of the men were not provided with any work equipment, it was almost twice as many for women with eleven percent.

Overall, female employees received less support from employers in all categories - from computers to smartphones to office furniture.

There were also differences between the sexes with regard to the current exposure.

At 48 percent, almost half of women often or always perceive their situation as “very stressful”, while it is only 36 percent for men.

Overall, life satisfaction has fallen since the beginning of the pandemic compared to February 2021: On a 10-point scale, the respondents gave a 6.7 compared to a 7.4 from April 2020. The 10 stands for a high level of satisfaction.

Overall, the work situation in Germany has changed significantly since the beginning of the pandemic.

In February 2021, 49 percent of employees stated that at this point in time they worked continuously or on some days in the home office or at another freely definable location.

In a comparable survey, it was only 36 percent between the beginning of July and mid-August 2020.

The proportion has thus increased by 13 percentage points.

According to the study, the proportion of home offices is likely to have doubled compared to the time before the pandemic.
