In Burma, armed repression today resulted in a bloodbath, the most serious since the protests began: at least 38 people were killed in several cities in the country, which have now become a daily battlefield where police fire on thousands of unarmed demonstrators protesting against the coup, despite multiple appeals from the international community.

While the Burmese on the Internet plead with the world to help them against the iron fist of the new regime, the military shows more and more every day that they are willing to kill innocent young people to stay in power.

Officers fired live bullets at Monywa, Mandalay and Myingyan, sometimes without warning of tear gas and rubber bullets.

Today's dramatic death toll, announced by the UN envoy, comes in the wake of another bloody weekend.

The situation is also very tense in the north of Yangon, in the North Okkalapa neighborhood.

To the dead are added the hundreds of arrests, which have raised the total to at least 1,300.

In this climate, a compromise seems impossible.

The coup general Min Aung Hlaing has so far proved deaf to any international appeal.

Today it was Pope Francis who launched an appeal to the world "so that the aspirations of the people of Myanmar are not stifled by violence".

Threats of sanctions from the United States and the European Union have also been futile so far.
