38 issues, 15 films - and soon a series of their own: The comic heroes Asterix and Obelix will be reissued as a 3D animation series on Netflix.
The streaming service announced on Wednesday.
As Dominique Bazay, Director of Original Animation at Netflix, wrote in a blog post, the series should be based on the comic book "The Battle of the Chiefs" from 1964, on which the cartoon "Asterix - Operation Hinkelstein" is based.
Bazay wrote that she has been thinking about how to match Asterix with Netflix for years.
As a French-Canadian, like most French-speaking people, she grew up watching the Asterix comics: "I watched and read the animated films and books religiously."
Alain Chabat will direct the series.
The Frenchman has experience with Asterix films: He was already the director of the real-life film »Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra« from 2002.
For the production, Netflix teams up with the French publisher Hachettes Les Editions Albert René.
The company is also behind a planned series about Asterix's dog Idefix, which will be broadcast on Super RTL at the end of the year.
