Half a year after the death of an administration trainee in front of the Kiel town hall, the public prosecutor's office charged two men.

The 61-year-old driver of a truck and his 73-year-old passenger are accused of negligent homicide, the authority said.

The truck had knocked over a flagpole while shunting, which broke off and fell into a group of young people.

The 23-year-old trainee was fatally hit.

The group consisted of the new apprentices from the city administration who had gathered for a group photo on their first day at work.

According to the public prosecutor, the two men supplied a construction site at the town hall with their truck and trailer.

The accident happened when they tried to hitch the trailer again.

The passenger had got out to prepare the trailer.

The driver backed up slowly, crashing into the flagpole.

Trucks apparently drove into the square without permission

As reported by the NDR, among other things, the truck driver is said to have driven on the site without a special permit and to have reset the truck without instruction.

As a result, the accused are said to have "improperly contributed to the event."

The charge is now being examined by the local court.

It also decides whether a main hearing will be opened.

According to the results of the investigations, the accident of August 3, 2020 was largely due to a material defect on the mast, which did not have the normal strength.
