In job advertisements, applicants are often asked to state their salary expectations in the cover letter.

Women often lose out here.

For 90 percent of employees, salary is one of the most important factors when deciding on a job.

But only around one in five employers mentions the salary * in their job advertisements - and mostly only in the form of vague formulations such as “customary in the market” or “above average”.

These are the results of a study by the StepStone job platform, for which a total of 28,000 people in Germany were surveyed and which is representative of the working population.

Job advertisements: State your desired salary in the cover letter?

A disadvantage for women

Salary information in job advertisements is rather rare, instead applicants are often asked to express their salary expectations in the cover letter.

“This approach represents a blatant imbalance. The employer expects applicants to position themselves clearly, while he or she does not let himself or herself look at the cards.

This means that many applicants * feel like supplicants and stay below their options, ”says Kerstin Rothermel, Chief People Officer at StepStone.

“Women in particular are particularly affected by this.

Our market research shows, for example, that they feel

significantly more uncomfortable than men when it comes to salary claims

.

We also observe that female students have significantly lower salary expectations than students even before they enter the labor market. ”According to the StepStone salary report, women generally still earn around 150,000 euros less than men in the course of their professional lives - despite comparable qualifications and positions.

Application: Salary information in job advertisements is often decisive

The study also shows that eight out of ten female employees would like more information about their salaries even when they are looking for the right job.

For example, 96 percent of the women surveyed would be more likely to apply for a job offer with a suitable content if it contained concrete salary information.

"Applicants and companies alike want to be treated at eye level in the application process," says Rothermel.

“This also includes an

open approach to salary payments

.

We are convinced that it will not only benefit the employees, but also the companies.

Because more wage transparency leads to more

fair wages

between men and women in the long term. ”
