The press conference of the ISS

 "The curve signals a regrowth of cases in Italy, but the regrowth is not only in Italy. In the last weeks there is a growth figure in Italy and the incidence is also rising".

This was stated by the president of the Higher Institute of Health

Silvio Brusaferro

at the press conference on the analysis of the weekly monitoring of the control room.

"The contagion at the moment occurs mainly at the family level. This is an important element", added Brusaferro.

Cases are falling in RSA "while some outbreaks are reported in hospitals and this may be due to the new variants", added Brusaferro.

"There is a scenario of rapid progression of the spread of the virus throughout Italy. We are approaching the alarm threshold of 250 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, which requires timely measures. This threshold has been exceeded in 5 regions and others will exceed it in the week current ", said the president of the ISS.

"We need to intervene in a timely and radical manner to contain the variants of the virus", explained Brusaferro.

Greater containment measures must be implemented starting with the regions.

"The Brazilian variant was present in more than 4% of the isolated strains in Italy but it worries us a little more and we need to make a greater effort to contain it. For this reason, as control room we have invited all the regions where it is present to implement measures of greater restriction and containment. The moment is critical with respect to the trend of the epidemic but we can intervene promptly also by giving impetus to the vaccination campaign ", said the director of Prevention of the health ministry

Gianni Rezza

.

"Now the over-80s are being vaccinated - added Rezza - and the regions are starting to vaccinate the hyper-vulnerable, but as we have more doses, the category criterion will disappear and the vaccine will be offered to the entire population in a way more flexible. This in addition to providing a national escort for the situations most at risk due to variations or higher incidence ".

"

Net acceleration of the epidemic

" with a national incidence of nearly 200 (194.87 per 100,000 inhabitants) with a forecast of further worsening: in the next few days it could reach 250. epidemic relating to the period 22-28 February.

The national incidence in the monitoring week, therefore, moves away from levels (50 per 100,000) that would allow the complete restoration of the identification of cases and tracing of their contacts throughout the national territory and indeed approaches the threshold of 250 cases for 100 thousand inhabitants.

The national average Rt reaches 1.06.

According to what is learned from the examination of the control room that is analyzing the data of the

weekly monitoring by Iss-Ministry of Health

that will be presented in the afternoon.

Last week the value was at 0.99.

Ten Regions / PPAA have a punctual Rt greater than 1 of which one (Molise)

has an Rt with the lower upper limit of 1.25, compatible with a type 3 scenario. Of the other nine, six have a Rt in the compatible lower limit. with a type 2 scenario. This is highlighted by the draft of the weekly monitoring Iss-ministry of health.

The Regions / PPAA that have an employment rate in intensive care and / or medical areas

above the critical threshold of 30%

worsen: they are 9 Regions / PPAA against 8 in the previous week.

Strong increase in the number of new cases not associated with transmission chains

: 41,833 against 31,378 in the previous week.

Between March and December 2020,

108,178 more deaths

were observed

than the average

for the same period in the years 2015-2019 (21% excess), wanting to estimate the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on total mortality.

In 2020, the total of deaths due to all the causes was the highest ever recorded in our country since the Second World War: 746,146 deaths, 100,526 deaths more than the 2015-2019 average (15.6% excess).

These are the data of the 5th Iss-Istat report on the 2020 mortality analysis for the total of deaths and for the subset of Covid-19 positive subjects who died.

From the beginning of the epidemic and up to 31 December 2020, the incidence of Covid-19 deaths on mortality due to all the causes by geographical distribution was

14.5% in the North, 6.8% in the Center and 5.2% in the South

.

The age groups are: 4.6% of the total in the 0-49 year old class, 9.2% in the 50-64 year old, 12.4% in the 65-79 year old and 9.6% in the eighty year old. or more.

This is highlighted by the Iss-Istat Report 'Impact of the covid-19 epidemic on the total mortality of the resident population in 2020'.

The most significant contribution to the excess deaths in 2020, compared to the average for the years 2015-2019, is due to the

increase in deaths of the population aged 80 and over,

which explains 76.3% of the overall excess mortality;

a total of 486,255 people aged 80 and over (76,708 more than in the previous five-year period) died.

The increase in mortality in the 65-79 age group in absolute terms compared to the average 2015-2019 figure is over 20,000 deaths (total of 184,708 deaths in 2020).

The balance of the first phase of the epidemic, in terms of excess deaths, is particularly heavy for Lombardy (+ 111.8%);

for all the other northern regions, the increase in deaths in the period March-May 2020 is between 42% and 47%;

only Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia have a lower excess of deaths (+ 19.4% and + 9.0%).

In the Center we highlight the Marche case (+ 27.7%), a region that stands out with respect to the average increase (+ 8.1%).

This was highlighted by the Iss-Istat Report 'Impact of the Covid epidemic on mortality 2020'.

In the second wave, it is noted, there are changes in the excesses of mortality.
