(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 04 - Food waste knows no borders and is independent of the income level and wealth of the country.

This was revealed by new United Nations research, according to which 17% of the food available for consumption was wasted in 2019.

In practice, 931 million tons ended up in the waste bins of households, retailers, restaurants and other food services around the world, for a weight equivalent to that of 23 million fully loaded 40-ton trucks.

The Food Waste Index Report 2021 of the United Nations Environment Program (Unep) and the Wrap organization is the most complete collection of data and analysis on the phenomenon to support global efforts to halve food waste by 2030. For the most part, households discard 11% of food, while services and retail outlets waste 5% and 2% respectively.

Globally, 121 kilograms of food are thrown away each year, with 74 kilograms at the household level.

A waste that has substantial environmental, social and economic impacts.

In fact, according to the UN, reducing them would lead to a cut in greenhouse gas emissions, to slow down the destruction of nature through land conversion, to increase the availability of food and therefore to decrease hunger in the world.
