The number of demonstrations in Berlin increased last year despite the corona pandemic.
A total of 5857 meetings took place, according to an evaluation by the police.
This involved 5,203 fixed gatherings and 654 elevators, five percent more than in 2019.
In addition, there were events planned in 1837 that had previously been canceled or not held.
The total number of registered rallies was almost 7,700. In the year before the corona crisis, the number was 5,603, according to the police. The authorities do not have reliable information about how many people took to the streets.
According to the police, two issues are likely to have played a special role: in 2019, climate protection was an "outstanding issue".
In 2020, this applied to protests against corona protective measures.
According to the police, the corresponding database shows 222 entries for the keywords "lateral thinking" and "corona" alone.
The rallies could have been significantly more numerous, as the police say.
"A large number of registered meetings with a large number of participants had to be canceled due to the Infection Protection Ordinance or even banned by the assembly authorities."
