At the end of February, walkers discovered a buried plastic barrel near the Lower Saxon community of Hagen am Teutoburg Forest.
The earth depot was hidden under branches in a forest and was carefully secured with wooden boards and lined with plastic tarpaulin.
The alarmed police discovered weapons and ammunition wrapped in plastic film in the barrel: a Kalashnikov AK47, another long weapon and 1,430 cartridges.
The Osnabrück police are investigating who created the underground depot.
There were no documents or other references.
It is the second earth hiding place that was discovered within a few months.
At the end of 2020, forest workers south of Hamburg discovered a plastic barrel with writings from the Revolutionary Cells as well as bomb building instructions and chemicals.
Initially it was assigned to the Red Army faction, which is now considered unlikely.
The investigation continues.
The State Criminal Police Office is aware of the current "find," said a spokeswoman.
"The first assessment" does not suggest "politically motivated crime".
