This Sunday, a new promotion of the national medal of recognition to victims of terrorism was published in the Official Journal.

It pays tribute to 237 victims, including 55 posthumously, and “salutes their resilience.

This specific medal was created on July 12, 2016 by François Hollande after the attacks in Paris and Saint-Denis on November 13, 2015, where 130 people were killed, and the attack against Charlie Hebdo in January of the same year.

It was Camille Quilin, victim of the Cairo attack on February 22, 2009, who was the first to receive her posthumously on June 1, 2018. The first collective decree dates from November 4, 2018. With these 237 new medalists, aged 5 to 90, France has now awarded this title to 458 people.

“The promotion has 237 people involved in 36 terrorist events that took place in France and 30 abroad, between 1974 (Drugstore Publicis) and 2019 (Paris police headquarters).

The victims of the attacks of November 13, 2015 in Paris and Saint-Denis (29 people) and of July 14, 2016 in Nice (27 people) are the most represented ”, details the Grand Chancellery in its press release.

Police officers and soldiers honored

In total, 182 were psychologically and / or physically injured, 34 of them were minors at the time of the events.

This medal request must be made by the victim or his family.

There are also 64 soldiers, 32 of whom were killed or wounded in the Drakkar attack in Beirut in 1983, and some affected during attacks in Corsica between 1995 and 2013. In addition, 19 police officers are included in this promotion, victims in particular the Parisian attacks of 2015 and 2019 at the police headquarters.

This promotion is also marked by the presence of 27 foreign people of 12 different nationalities.

Thirteen of them died in 1989 in the explosion of UTA flight DC10 over the Ténéré desert (Niger).

In addition, 87 French people are victims of attacks committed abroad, including eight affected in Barcelona (August 17, 2017) and seven in the Kangaba attack (Mali, June 18, 2017).

To claim this distinction, one must be recognized as a victim of terrorism either by the Paris prosecutor's office, or by the victims' guarantee fund, or be on the shared list of victims of terrorism maintained by the Ministry of Justice.

In terms of protocol, this decoration is the fifth most important behind the Legion of Honor, the Order of Liberation, the Military Medal and the National Order of Merit.
