 Piazza Nicola Amore returns to shine in the heart of Naples: after almost 20 years of work, one of the most fascinating subway stations in the world will be in operation in a month.

In the historic center of the Neapolitan city, the architect Massimiliano Fuksas and his wife Doriana Mandrelli signed the project for the futuristic "Duomo" stop on line 1 of the subway, which is breathtakingly beautiful;

it certainly took it away from the Neapolitans who have been waiting since November 2001 and who had to give up one of the most famous and strategic open spaces in the city, occupied by construction sites for two decades.

    Yet the discomfort will surely give way to amazement, because the archistar's project is truly a marvel.

It is a transparent glass dome made of corten steel;

the descent from the plane towards the tracks is comparable to the walk of an astronaut - as Fuksas himself defined it - who sees the Earth from the moon and observes the phases of the day that follow one another: the daylight coming from the dome, in fact, allows at the station to literally change color.

    The reason for the length of the works is easy to say: during the excavations numerous archaeological remains were found which interrupted the works and prolonged the duration of the construction sites.

Among the treasures discovered there are a Hellenistic arcade of the Flavian age, the Gymnasium, temple of the isolympic games wanted by the emperor Augustus in 2 AD, and an unknown number of tombs, skeletons and statues as well as engravings in the marble.

The remains can be visited and visible from the square thanks to the transparent glass of the dome.

“In order to preserve the temple,” explained architect Fuksas, “a geodesic bubble structure was devised with a triangular steel and glass frame to let in direct natural light.

The glass allows for visual legibility and continuity from the outside to the inside, also giving a touch of lightness to the volume in the center of the square.

The first basement level houses the temple ».

    But the works on the Naples metro are not finished: by the first half of 2021 the complete opening of Piazza Municipio is expected with the station, already in operation, designed by Portuguese architects Àlvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura;

and in June there will also be the opening of the Chiaia-Monte di Dio station of the underground line 6, designed by the architect Uberto Siola and embellished by the works of the artist Peter Greenaway, 320 eyes forming a large central dome.

Finally, also in 2021 and always for the underground line number 6, the completion of the works of the Arco Mirelli station in Piazza della Repubblica, designed by the German architect Hans Kollhoff at the west end of the Villa Comunale, is expected to be completed. Liberty.

    Other wonders, therefore, enrich the city of Naples, which already boasts the splendid Toledo station, crowned by the Daily Telegraph as the most beautiful in the world.

Designed by the Catalan architect Oscar Tusquets and inaugurated in 2012, the stop in the San Giuseppe district offers the sensation of immersing yourself in the ocean thanks to the white and blue decorations and all the shades of the sea in a spectacular play of water and lights.
