Joan Laporta is the new president of Barcelona, chosen by over 54% of the tens of thousands of members (51,983) who voted to decide the successor of Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned months ago and has just returned from being arrested in the context of investigation by the Catalan judiciary on the so-called 'Barcagate'.

Laporta - a lawyer who was president of the Catalan club from 2003 to 2010, a period marked by the triumphs of the team led by Pep Guardiola - immediately took a big advantage in the preferences, clearly beating the other two candidates, Víctor Font, who stopped just below the 30%, and Toni Freixa, a former ally of Bartomeu who obtained about 10% of preferences.

Of the more than 110,000 eligible voters, about one fifth voted by post and over 30,000 today in attendance.

Among them Leo Messi, who presented himself accompanied by one of his sons, and many players, as well as champions and coaches of the past.

There were three candidates: Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Toni Freixa.

The polls were closed at 9 pm. Despite the difficulties in exiting and moving around caused by the pandemic, the vote took place without any particular problems.

Among the voters also Lionel Messi, accompanied by one of his sons, Busquets, Jordi Alba, Sergi Roberto and Riqui Puig, all players of the first 'blaugrana' team.

Then also past champions and symbolic men of Barça such as Luis Enrique, Pichi Alonso, Carles Puyol, Sergi and Unzué.

Former presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu also voted.
